About the congress :
Held from April 23–26 in Asunción, Paraguay, IBEROHEMO 2025 brought together major scientific societies:
- The Ibero-American Hematology Congress (SEHH)
- The Paraguayan Society of Hematology and Transfusion Medicine (SPHYMT)
- The newly formed Paraguayan Society of Transfusion Medicine and Cell Therapy (SPMTTC)
The event attracted more than 900 healthcare professionals from over 25 countries, featured 100+ expert speakers, and showcased over 200 scientific works in oral and poster format, making it one of the most impactful events in transfusion medicine in the region.
Macopharma Symposium: Scientific Innovation with Regional Impact
The symposium took place on Thursday, April 24, and was moderated by Dr. Ludwig Frontier, Scientific Marketing Manager for the Americas Region. He opened with a presentation on emerging regulatory trends, particularly the international push to eliminate toxic plasticizers from blood bags, and highlighted innovative alternatives already being adopted by leading institutions.
Key presentations included:
- “Leukodepletion: A Critical Point in Transfusion Safety”
Dr. Oscar Walter Torres (Argentina) reviewed the clinical value and regional progress in implementing universal leukoreduction, focusing on safety and patient outcomes.
- “Optimizing Platelet Supply: Evidence and Benefits of Buffy Coat”
Dr. Emmanuel Fernández Sánchez (Mexico) discussed scientific evidence supporting Buffy Coat-based platelet pooling, including its logistical advantages and safety profile for Latin America.
An interactive roundtable and Q&A followed, allowing for dynamic discussion with active participation from the audience.

Scientific posters : our commitment to innovation and partnership in transfusion medicine
We had the pleasure to present four posters :
- Alliance with the National Service of Health’s Center for Blood Services – Paraguay
Poster: “Comparative analysis of the quality control of blood components obtained with Top and Bottom vs. Top and Top in-line filter systems.”
–> Superior quality with T&B system in RBCs, plasma, and platelets.

2 & 3. Partnership with the Social Security Institute (IPS) – Paraguay
- Poster 2: “Evaluation of the quality control of blood components obtained with the Top and Bottom System.”
- Poster 3: “Quality control of leucodepleted platelet concentrates from Buffy Coat pooling with PAS.”
–> Emphasizing improved quality of components and effective platelet preparation. Results: Average concentration of 3.2×1011 in 265 ml in PASS from 4 Buffy Coat from MQT bags, overnight time less.
Watch the presentation of the poster by DR. Elio Marecos : GCIAMT2025 Poster con Dr Marecos
- Collaboration with Dos de Mayo National Hospital – Peru
Poster: “Verification of quality control of leucodepleted platelet concentrates processed from Buffy Coat pool with resting time <6 hours.”
–> Strong platelet concentration and quality, even with reduced resting time. Results: platelet concentration of 3.3×1011 with 295 ml in PASS solution from 4 BC from MQT bags and resting time of less than 6 hours.
Congratulations to our Hispanic America team for their involvement !
